Singer, songwriter, activist and fierce defender of the LGBTQI2S+ community worldwide, Bia Ferreira defines her music as MMP, Música de Mulher Preta (Black Woman Music). She broke into the public consciousness in 2017 with the song “Cota Não é Esmola,” about the importance of the quota system for black people’s access to university. In addition to garnering 13 million views on YouTube and several million plays on Spotify, the lyrics became mandatory reading for the University of Brasília’s entrance exam. In 2018, Bia was nominated for the Women in Music Awards. The messages on her last album, Igreja Lesbiteriana: Um Chamado, (Lesbitarian Church: A Calling), are hitched to a carriage of funky rhythms, reggae and soulful ballad grooves. This year, she has performed on some of Portugal’s biggest stages, including a memorable concert at the Festival Músicas do Mundo in Sines.
