The people's choice award
that makes the world grow
Les SYLI D'OR DE LA MUSIQUE DU MONDE, is a unique and annual event initiated by Les Productions Nuits d'Afrique in 2007 which attributes honours created to encourage the development, the growth and the expression of world music artists and to promote their music within Montreal's musical industry.
These distinctions emphasize the wealth and diversity of musical genres presented by highly talented musicians whose roots or influences lie elsewhere and who now make their music here. The SYLI D'OR event ensures world music artists of the greatest possible public exposure. Starting in 2009, Productions Nuits d'Afrique is pleased to help artists develop new audiences in regions outside Montreal through its artistic partners.
In the Soussou language, spoken in Guinea, "syli" means elephant, a symbol of power, nobility and long life, values inherent to world music, a link between tradition and universal culture.
The 4th edition of the World Music Syli d'Or will take place as follows: On Tuesdays and Wednesdays from February 23 to April 21, 2010, the public will attend the shows and vote for the group of its choice. The nine groups that get the most votes will take part in the semi-finals on April 27, 28 and 29, 2010.
The three finalists, chosen by the public votes and by a jury of music professionals, will take part in the SYLI D'OR WORLD MUSIC GALA on Thursday, May 6, 2010. Three prizes will be awarded at this gala: the Syli d'Or, the Syli d'Argent and the Syli de Bronze.
