Ayrad is the brainchild of composer / singer Hamza Abouabdelmajid and oboist Annick Beauvais. The collective is now made up of six talented multi-instrumentalists who are past masters of world music cross-pollination –Gabriel Brochu-Lajoie- bass, double bass & voice –, Anit Ghost – violin –, Kattam Laraki-Côté – percussion – and Bertil Schulrabe – drums.
Ayrad explores myriad musical styles, shifting from Andalusian and Berber rhythms to Reggae, Raï and Latin grooves.
The collective (sextet) – is distinguished by its moving poetry, its inspiring melodies and its improvisatory skills. In addition to own compositions, the group breathes new life into pieces drawn from the Maghrebian, Arab-Andalusian and Moroccan-Jewish repertoires.
The band started his career on stage during opening parts of Bambara Trans (Radio Canada Revelation). In 2012 he was a finalist to Mon accès à la scène in Villeray. He was awarded some time later of the 2012-1013 PRIX DE LA DIVERSITÉ (CBC, Place des Arts, Vision diversité, CAM and MAI), Ayrad have performed at the Festival Orientalys, the Week-end des rythmes du monde, the Festival des traditions du monde , and the Rendez-vous de la chanson Québecor.
Ayrad has been nominated for the 2015 Juno Awards in the category of world music album. The award ceremony takes place during the week of 2015 Junos in Hamilton, Ontario, from 9 to 15 March.
