MOKOOMBA

Biography :

Mokoomba comes from Victoria Falls, in Zimbabwe. Chinotimba is where the group’s six members grew up and got to know one another: Mathias Muzaza (lead singer and percussions), Ndaba Coster Moyo (drums and vocals), Trustworth Samende (guitar and vocals), Donald Moyo (keyboard and vocals), Miti Mugande (percussions and vocals) and Abundance Mutori (bass and vocals). Their style blends traditional and modern instruments, playing on the richness of diverse beats: ethno-jazz, soukous, Sahara blues, hip hop and salsa. This explosive mixture, combined with their exuberant energy, sets stages alight. They also create strong vibes with the traditional music of the Tonga people, an influence they draw from their solo singer Mathias Muzaza.

Although they played together throughout their adolescence, since 2001, the group formed officially in 2007. It immediately became a hit: at the Music Crossroads InterRegional Festival in Malawi in 2008, Mokoomba won the competition and thereby gained the opportunity to go on a European tour and to record an initial album, Kweseka. On this six-track album, while offering a hopeful tone, they speak frankly of their native Zimbabwe, of the AIDS epidemic that has ravaged the country and of the various ills of society.

Numerous concerts followed, especially in Europe, and in 2013 Ivorian singer Manou Gallo produced their second album, Rising Tide, which was received enthusiastically. This work earned praise from the specialized media, from Songlines magazine to NPR, and bolstered their international reputation. In the next three years, they toured continuously, not only in Europe but all over the world. They were even the subject of a documentary film, Mokoomba: From One River Bank to Another, by Frank Dalmat and Francis Ducat.

In 2015, they recorded their third album, Luyando, which was self-produced. Alternating between reflective acoustic songs and joyful tracks for dancing, Mokoomba returned to the essence of its style and to the unmatched blend of sounds and influences at the root of its originality. Without losing any time, they are currently preparing their fourth album, planned for 2018.
