It is with great enthusiasm that the Festival international Nuits d’Afrique, presented by the TD Bank Group, offers you Live on its Facebook page @nuits.dafrique, this Thursday, October 29 at 8 p.m., the fourth musical journey in its Live from Montreal’s African Nights series. With Zal Sissokho (Sénégal) and Gypsy Kumbia Orchestra (Colombie, Balkans), world music fans will be able to see and hear performances by these artists from Montreal’s World scene for free.
The Festival will put online a sequence of the best moments of these two concerts.
First Part – Zal Sissokho
Les Grands Événenements Series, presented by ICI Musique
Flamenco improvisations play with the fluid and crystalline sounds of the kora. With this project, forming the basis of his album Kora Flamenca, Zal Sissokho, the Montréal griot and virtuoso of this majestic 21-string instrument, offers a real surprise. “Although the two types of music may breathe differently, the dialogue flows naturally. The kora never falls behind the syncopated and sometimes frenzied rhythms of flamenco, and the voice of Zal Sissokho remains just as cool and undulating as if he were singing Mandinka blues” (La Presse, 2020). A performance of great beauty.
Second Part – Gypsy Kumbia Orchestra
Les Grands Événenements Series, presented by ICI Musique
“They go beyond Afro-Colombian and Balkan rhythms with a broader sweep of the world and of the communities from which we are drawn. They have included melodies from India and the Andes as well as Québec influences” (La Presse, 2020). Due to Covid-19, the launch of their new album, Velkombak, moved to the Web. This first performance since the release, is staged by Ricard Soler and Patrick Léonard, well known in the circus world, is a major Nuits d’Afrique première. It promises to be a glowing, vibrant and magical celebration.
