A star lifted to the very zenith of Afrobeat. More than a singer-songwriter, he could also be called the “Voice of Guinea.” Now 33, Souleymane Bangoura has thrust his soul vibe and R&B to the fore, daring to compete with his favourite American artists from the nineties and aughties. This proud ambassador of Conakry and Mandinka culture has answered the call of the beguiling muses of dance, music and song!

For this gifted artist, winner of RFI’s 2016 Prix Découvertes, singing is about dispelling doubt and mustering resolve. With the soul of a fighter, his spunky personality has led him on an impressive musical journey. What sets Soul Bang’s apart is his powerful, crystal-clear voice as well as the finely choreographed dance of those accompanying him, like in the video of the tantalizing “Wo Mama,” released a few months ago. His formula reflects the three colours of the Guinean flag.

Since his first internationally released 2019 album, Yelenna, Soul Bang’s has been a major force on the West African cultural scene. His artistic talents are put to good use celebrating life but also, on a more personal level, lamenting deep losses. Viewed over half a million times on YouTube is his touching tribute, “Balakononifing,” to the legendary Mory Kanté, whose daughter, the gifted Manamba Kanté, is also Souleymane’s life partner. Together, they praise their country with a boundless energy that nourishes the souls of all who hear them. And the code word for these soulmates? It’s their beloved Guinea!

Like a soldier, the singer is ready for any battle. Defending girls and women is top of mind for this passionate artist, just as the plight of Boko Haram victims in Nigeria is intolerable to him, and he pours his heart into the #BringBackOurGirls movement’s poignant song “Break the Silence.”

With five albums under his belt, Soul Bang’s is back again this year with a new arrangement with musicians of “Itomou sérieux.” Always at the top, ready to reign. That’s the credo of this man who has built up an exponentially growing fan base. You’re definitely going to be adopting him this summer!
