About
Have you ever heard of “Thieb Bou Dub”? Not Thiebou Diene—that exquisite Senegalese rice dish comprised of fish and root vegetables in a rich savoury sauce—we did mean “Dub”! We owe this deliciously catchy title of an irresistible dance track to a Franco-Senegalese trio, bursting with electro vibes, that blends Sabar—mystically expressed through dance and drumbeats—with exuberance and sensuality. It’s the perfect recipe for a show we will get to savour this summer!
It started with a search for something perfect in the Wolof language: “Guiss Guiss Bou Bess”—meaning “New Vision.” Right on! In 2016, two percussion enthusiasts join forces. Mara Seck, son of the legendary Alla Seck—Sabar ambassador and notable voice in Senegal’s history—and Stéphane Costantini, percussionist-turned-beatmaker, lay the foundations for this unique endeavour. Their debut album, Set Sela, meaning “to visit” in Wolof, sets the stage for this new export-ready sound. The duo is joined by percussionist Babacar Diop, who channels all his energy into the skins of the sabar, djembe and tama drums.
With its diversity of genres, Guiss Guiss Bou Bess is taking the world by storm. They make us want to lose ourselves in their blazing fire, to leave our cares behind and relish the taste of freedom. No matter where they perform—whether in France, Spain, Morocco, Mexico, or, of course, Senegal—a party erupts to the sounds of Afrobass, drum & bass, trap and Angolan kuduro.
Two years ago, the trio created a buzz with their song “Ça Rigole Pas” by raising the bar higher still with even faster tempos. See if you can keep up with the beat without tripping over your feet! Now, are you ready for the rush of “electrosabarization”?
