What could be more pleasant than taking in some konpa Creole grooves to help you forget your troubles and dance those cares away. Their appearance this spring at the Syli d’Or de la Musique du Monde marked this season of renewal. These proud ambassadors of konpa have certainly breathed new life into this Haitian phenomenon from the 1950s. Thanks to brothers Duckens and Jean Wesly Fils, the pairing of keyboard with lively percussion rhythms has not only captured the imagination of Montrealers but has drawn in fans from all over the world. Not only has the band made a name for itself on the Francophone festival circuit, Baz Konpa is being hailed across Canada, including in Nunavut, all the way to Abidjan for the authenticity of their sound.

Part of the world music circuit since 2018, Baz Konpa isn’t a local secret anymore. While they are already celebrated at home and by the Haitian community, who recognize in the quartet’s sound a faithful reflection of such legends as Les Frères Déjean or Tabou Combo—2025 style, their singles “Sel Lanmou Kap Rete” (2023) and “Rete Avem” (2024) are indisputable internet hits. So, take a plunge into Baz Konpa’s world and get a taste of their groove, and you may just help konpa get added to UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. …
