You can expect an amazing journey into 13th-century African history with this “music warrior,” Mohammed Mara! Discovered in 2011, the Benkadi frontman—often dressed in a manner similar to allies of the ancient Mali Empire’s ruler, Sundiata Keita—is nothing short of astounding. Mara uses all forms of expression to bring the rich Mandinka story to life before our very eyes. Before moving to Québec, this multidisciplinary artist had already been honing his skills at the Ballet National de Guinée, a leading company in West Africa. His passion for sharing also inspired him to become a teacher here in Montreal.

Bendaki, a Syli d’Or de la Musique du Monde winner in 2012, is the delicious fruit of Mara’s quest for creative excellence, a journey that began under the tutelage of Guinea’s most illustrious dance, theatre and percussion masters. His message is one of victory for collectivity and union, encapsulated in the Bambara word Benkadi, meaning “all together.” The artist instinctively knows that it is hard to feel alone during a show designed to draw people together. Beating his djembe and an array of other percussion instruments, including the indispensable balafon, the singer opens up his soul with the truth that inhabits him. His dance steps inspire you to follow his lead, in the ambiance of a huge African party, and on into the wee hours of the morning…
