Come and experience the first female slam poet to figure among the Prix Découvertes RFI’s finalists. Lydol certainly knows how to promote her art and make a name for herself. Since her creative residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, she has gained recognition for her innovative performances at prestigious international events. She has been acclaimed in Cameroon and across the African continent, and Montreal will follow suit at Festival International Nuits d’Afrique!
Dolly Sorel Nwafo took her first breath in 1994 in Cameroon’s capital, Youndé. Channelling her inner muse, she became immersed in improv and theatre early on, an experience that lent itself well to the musical play of her slam poetry, where improvisation transforms into expressive amplitude. And she has succeeded with a succession of releases, from her albums, Slamthérapie in 2018 and Hybride in 2022, to several singles that deliver a stance against violence towards women. Lydol has a role to play, in her beloved Africa and across the globe as well. Committed to the living arts, Lydol promotes festivals such as Plurielles and Slam’Up, as well as Science Slam Cameroon competition. She also founded the SHEroes Association, which helps and supports women and girls who are victims of violence, while her Style haut à stylo workshops allow her to coach new talent.
Lydol, whose art has reached a new level of maturity, is as much a lioness, a she-wolf and a hare, as we discover in “Lionne, Louvre et Lièvre” from her new EP Fragile. She embodies her words through her poetry and, in this latest work, moves beyond the “intimate” to make slam poetry accessible to a wider audience. Lydol also shows great versatility by going full glam on the video of her 2024 hit song “Lâm,” featuring Fadil Le Sorcier. This divine artist is a must for those who believe in the power of words and poetry in 2025.
