About

Do you have Baraka? It’s that divine grace that brings good fortune and a fitting introduction to this extraordinary Franco-Moroccan trio’s upcoming concert in Montreal. From the very first listen, you’ll be captivated by the charm and power of this trio, which takes you to the realms of trance. Close your eyes and let a sensation of euphoria wash over you. Guided by a mystical Moroccan force—that of the great Gnawa movement within world music—while drawing on powerful vibrations from distant lands, singer Adil Smaali boldly steers the Baraka train. Passionate about exploratory journeys, the musician and his group deliver a sound that is deeply influenced by India, Eastern Europe, and the hub of electronic music: Berlin.

The full-on musical adventure undertaken by Adil and Lakay—French producer of psychedelic electronic music, trumpeter, and multi-instrumentalist—has also become that of multi-percussionist Mélaine Cogez on stage. With this trio, the chemistry is electric, energy sizzles, and the very essence of raw power is revealed; it’s an intoxicating mix expressed through the roots of hadra, gateway to Sufism’s sacred trance.

An experience like no other, you won’t want to miss this patchouli-infused journey in boundless space. Hop aboard their caravan to ascend to new sensory heights, feel your toes in the hot sand while basking in the Essaouira sun and gaze toward distant horizons. A wild party is brewing in a “no man’s land” with these spirited musicians. Electrified guitar and oud strings blend with the synthesizer, providing a buzz with a Burning Man vibe. Open your chakras to take in Gnawa chants—from yesteryear and today—with percussive rhythms shrouded in mystery, and witness the awakening of the Fire of Life, a dance from the dawn of time.
