About

Her mischievous gaze and her feminism, which bridges the gap between men and women, does us good and eases any tension. The Santiago native comes to us, travelling this long distance with a brand-new album, Spedju, a celebration of over 10 years of musical talent, and more than just a nod to “the Barefoot Diva” Cesária Évora and her immortal morna “Sodade”.

It has taken a great deal of perseverance to rise to the surface of the music world and taste recognition. Elida Almeida comes from a long way back. Cape Verde, a treasure trove of islands off the coast of Senegal, was long off the international radar. But with self-sacrifice and boundless talent, this young woman has left her mark in some fifty countries. A remarkable achievement!

Oscillating between carnival music and intimate confessions, her sound is steeped in Cape Verdean instruments such as the Búzios conch shell. On the exquisite “Lebam Ku Bo” (“I took you with me”—a FINA favourite), Elida tenderly expresses her sense of belonging, her attachment to others and to fond memories. Taken from her debut album Ora Doci Ora Margos (“Sweet Moments, Bitter Moments”), the artist ventures off the beaten track, revealing her humble origins as a girl from the village of Kebrada. She deservedly won the RFI Découvertes Award that year.

A fabulous performer with a strong character, inspired by the volcanoes of Santiago Island and her fellow countrymen, Almeida is a delight to savour, like a crunchy almond. The arrangements that elevate her art envelop her highly danceable music in a kaleidoscope of colour and heartfelt emotion. A graceful singer whose magnetic aura and intoxicating voice make it impossible not to fall in love with her. Admire her radiant smile as she plays her signature treble clef, accompanied by the harmonious blend of accordion and keyboard. It is so easy to embrace her vision of a happy life!
