BIOGRAPHY

Friendly and always smiling, this veteran of the Brazilian diaspora in Montreal has a creative energy to match the Main’s feverish pace. His base since 1986, Montreal is probably much like his native São Paulo. Ramos was born to a family and community of artists and already tuned to the vibrations of the guitar, percussions and song, which this singer-songwriter naturally absorbed, leading to the creation of his first trio, the Paulo Ramos Group. Acclaimed in Canada and internationally, from California to Japan, the band produced two albums, Zig-zag (1988) and Futuro (1991).

Ten years later, the trio resurfaced in all their splendour at the Montreal Jazz Festival. Another album, Africa do Brasil, won a JUNO in 1997. Bolstered by many accolades, Paul Ramos has been linking Rio and Montreal with a continuous string of internationally acclaimed albums. To top it off, he is in full command of the artistic process for fellow Brazilian musicians Bïa and Monica Freire, who entrusted him with producing their albums. Determined as ever, it would take more than a pandemic to slow Ramos down! On his ninth and recent album, Lua Vermelha (Red Moon) (2022) Disque Nuits d’Afrique, he brought together his whole gang to deliver a sound that is as lively as ever. Also, his complete discography was rereleased digitally in 2023 by Disque Nuits d’Afrique.
