These “Amazons” are the voice of the Resistance. They are an all-female ensemble of Indigenous artists who embody the beauty of Nature and channel the strength of their ancestors to take us to the farthest reaches of their Brazilian homeland. A sensational immersion, lulled by gentleness yet driven by a thirst for justice.

Majestic in their sincerity, these sublime warriors have been using their Carimbó—Afro-Indigenous rhythms and dance from Brazil—as a form of wake-up call since 2018. Their defence of their territory against external threats resonates through their voices, their feet, and the skins of their drums, making them part of a movement rooted in the struggles of Indigenous peoples worldwide. Never before has such a group emerged from this South American country.

The courage that Suraras do Tapajós shows in the face of a Brazil trending towards the right, is an art that cannot be underestimated. What meaning does life have if the rights of women and indigenous peoples are trampled upon? Their music arises from the sounds of the forest ecosystem, from its branches imbued with an earthy aroma to the birds that reign there. On stage, it becomes a special communion of melodies and dances to awaken the senses and social consciousness.

A celebration of landscapes, the profound joy of being a woman and having the freedom of expression to change the course of events—Suraras do Tapajós embodies all of this and more. Together, its members proudly advocate for issues that are vital to their community. On the 2024 song “Da Nascente à Foz,” the group protests against the dangers of illegal mining in the state of Pará, along the crystal-clear Tapajós River, a major tributary on the right bank of the Amazon River. Well informed on these issues, they present alarming statistics about the situation, reinforcing their call for lasting change.
