Originating on the outskirts of Oran, Raï is one of Algeria’s leading musical genres. The word rai means opinion. Until the mid-1980s, this style of music evolved in an underground context. It then gradually spread thanks to singers and groups who were able to adapt the melodies and lyrics to reach a wide audience. The Gasba project initially came about when two Montreal musicians (guitarist Rafik Abdeladim and bassist Yassine Aissa El Bey) got together around the same idea: to reinvigorate the Montreal arts scene by sharing this music. They were later joined by Amine Koudeche (singer), Ahmed Kaouane (keyboardist), Youva Ouaneche (percussionist) and Sylvain Plante (drummer). This musical project sees itself as a link between tradition and modernity.

The group’s name was inspired by the reed flute used in traditional Algerian music, particularly the bédoui from Oran (the precursor of rai), known as the Guésba or Gasba. The sound of this flute has inspired many Rai singers and groups, including Cheb Khaled, Cheb Mami and the ONB.

The Guesba group’s music is a blend of typically Rai sounds with other musical styles such as rock, flamenco and reggae.
