Plucked jarana strings starts things off, followed by the strum of the requinto, the violin and double bass and accented by the percussive tempo of the cajón and tarima, atop which the singer is perched when she adds her guttural voice to the mix. Gathering together in a public space, having fun, dancing till you drop, and partying until the wee hours. That’s just what they do around Veracruz, where Son jarocho (since popularized by La Bamba) is at the heart of communal gatherings. It is this same energy, poetry, spirit of community that El Balcón wants to communicate to their audiences in their own special way, interspersed with bursts of Turkish, Greek and Bulgarian rhythms.
