Jonas Attis was born in Jérémie on Haiti’s southwest coast, known as “The City of Poets”. Jérémie has a history of a generation of politically committed artists. Brought up in a musical family, Jonas was surrounded by the country’s deep-rooted traditions from an early age, and soon began writing songs. In 1993, Jonas embarked on an ill-fated trip with his grandmother, the famous leader of a local rara band. They boarded an overcrowded ferry called the Neptune, which capsized – nearly 1,000 people died in the tragedy. Jonas spent 3 days floating in the sea before being rescued – his grandmother was not so lucky. With his grandmother’s musical spirit running through him, Jonas has become a prolific songwriter in Haiti’s racine movement and has become known throughout Port-au-Prince as a passionate and moving singer with an infectious energy on stage. Jonas is one of LakouMizik’s main songwriters, and his unique style lies somewhere between roots music, pop and hip-hop. His songs mix sharp political lyrics with sing-along choruses and never fail to get the crowd moving.
