SALIM ICHALLAL
SALIM ICHALLAL
To mark the 28th anniversary of Lounès Matoub’s death, Algerian singer Salim Ichallal is holding a concert to honour the life of this activist artist.
A leading figure in the Berber identity movement in Algeria, Lounès Matoub played a key role in promoting and popularising Amazigh (Berber) culture and in the struggle for democracy and secularism in Algeria. A leading figure in Kabyle music throughout the Amazigh region, he remains a symbol of Kabylie.
Matoub was assassinated on 25 June 1998 in controversial circumstances: whilst Islamist extremists are officially held responsible, many Kabyles accuse the Algerian government of being behind the assassination.
